Big Plans & Somewhat Scary Goals for 2018

Jan 3

I really enjoy reading other people’s goals and aspirations for the year ahead.  It may be because I’m a sucker for fresh starts, a lover of new beginnings.  Plus, I’m a firm believer in putting your goals out there to stay accountable and have something to look back on in 12 months so you can say, “Yes!  I did these things!”

So, here are some personal and business goals for 2018:

Plan Italy with plenty of time to take it all in.  It’s so tempting to pack our itinerary, but I really want to be able to relax and get lost in each city we visit.

Mini Goal: Do Duolingo every day until it’s time to leave!  I started back in November but fell off the wagon.  I don’t expect to be fluent — I just don’t want to feel lost!

Blog twice a week (not including wedding & engagement posts!).  I believe 2018 is going to be a year of growth, and I plan to tell you guys about it.  I had an epiphany about myself recently: I am a writer IN MY SOUL.  It’s how I process.  It’s how I express myself best.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve kept diaries (complete with the tiny lock and key) and journals.  Writing was just for me, but I think it’s time to share a little more.  Because when you figure out what it’s in your soul, it needs to come out.  The scary part is . . . part of that is going to require me to be more vulnerable here.

Shoot 8 weddings.  Being 100% honest with y’all . . . my bookings are down this year.  Wedding photography is a fickle, fickle business!  I have a few more to go until I hit 8, but I have hope for some Fall weddings to pop up. ‘Tis engagement season, after all.  🙂

Spend more intentionally.  I’m pretty good with money, but I think I’ve gotten a little reckless with spending recently.  Honestly, once I paid off all of my car and college debt, I stopped saving as carefully.  In 2018, I’m getting the old Dave Ramsey out again to get back on track!  I’m also interested in doing a Contentment Challenge, so we’ll see!

Reduce Clutter & Live Simply.  I’ve moved 4 times less than 4 years, and every time I’ve thought, “I’m going to get rid of so much clutter this move!”  And then I would unpack in the new place and think, “How do I STILL have this much STUFF?!”  What I’ve realized about myself is that clutter stresses me out.  I’m turning to Emily Ley’s new book to help me create solid routines to keep my clothing piles, dirty dishes, and MAIL under control!  So much mail laying around you guys.  It drives me insane.

Read 60 books!  This is a little lower than I thought I would do after I finished out 2017 with 40 books.  But I have a few reasons.  One, I like that it’s a nice, even five books a month.  That seems super attainable without becoming a CHORE, which is reason number two.  I don’t want to set my reading goal at a big number to impress people, then feel like I HAVE to read this many books in this amount of time.  That would take the fun and relaxation out of reading, which is the whole point for me!

The caveat for this one is that they cannot all be fiction!  I like to read what I’m in the mood for, so I won’t be too terribly strict.  I just want to make sure I have a good mix of self-development, business, fiction, and biographies.

**I highly recommend Goodreads if you want to work on your reading life in 2018!

There’s definitely a word that keeps coming up in these goals, so I think as I wrote these, I found my word for 2018 (see, writing is how I process!).

Plan trips with intention (a focus on enjoying the time with Robert).  Blog intentionally (share my story, share my soul).  Spend intentionally (unsubscribe from Kate Spade sale emails).  Basically, I want to be sure I’m spending my time and money well.

Wishing us all luck!
