Nothing breaks my heart more than having to tell a bride that I’m not available for their wedding date!
I think sometimes couples wait to book photography for their wedding because they just feel it’s too early to pull the trigger on such a big investment. You might think you need to look more, meet with every photographer you find on Google, wait to see if your budget changes, etc. My advice? Don’t wait!! When you find someone whose style you love and whose personality you click with, nail it down! Take care of your photography coverage sooner rather than later. There are so many benefits!
You get the photographer you WANT, not the photographer who is available. Peak wedding season is May – October/November, and those months book up so quickly. You don’t want to end up booking your second or third choice for a photographer or any wedding vendor. I book clients on a first come, first serve basis after I’ve determined we’re a good fit. Get your inquiries in as soon as possible, as in as soon as you’ve gotten engaged and narrowed down a date and/or venue!!
*Note: I do require that my clients have a set date and venue before they sign a contract with me. That way your photography contract sets the date in stone and specifies any travels fees we may need to take care of. That doesn’t mean you have to have those things BEFORE you contact me! We can always start getting to know each other and get your wedding date on my radar. 🙂
You get your engagement photos done when you WANT, not when you CAN. I have no problem with shooting an engagement session a month or even a few weeks before the wedding, but YOU might! All of my wedding packages come with a complimentary engagement session for us to really get comfortable with each other, so you’ll want to take advantage of that for things like announcements, save the dates, wedding websites, etc. Plus, you’ll want to be able schedule your shoot during your ideal season (Spring for the flowers, Fall for the leaves). If you wait too long to book, scheduling your e-session might be tough.
You can use your photographer as a PLANNING RESOURCE. As photographers, we see weddings from top to bottom, from hair & makeup to your getaway transportation. We also spend a lot of time networking and working with other wedding vendors. I always tell my clients to USE me for I am wealth of vendor referrals! I know which vendors may fit your style and which vendors do excellent work because I’ve seen it firsthand.
The most important thing to remember when booking your photographer is to trust your gut! If you feel a connection with them and love their work, go for it!! It also helps to check out their reviews (you can find reviews from my past clients on the Love Letters page!), make sure they have a solid contract for you to sign, etc. etc. but you guys already know all that. 😉
